Mozilla Firefox project (formerly Firebird, which was formerly Phoenix) is a redesign of Mozilla's browser component, written using the XUL user interface language and designed to be cross-platform. It includes a popup blocker, tabbed browsing, a smarter search, hassle free downloading, and improved privacy and security.

It appears that Microsoft has released Betas of two major updates for Windows Vista. These packs contain a range of important fixes and improvements, many of which were hoped for in Vista SP1. The final version of these packs should be released officially shortly, but for now I would recommend against installing the betas on a home PC.

Major Updates

Microsoft has released the August Update for DirectX. Currently there is only the full redistributable, however the web installer will be available shortly. It's not critical, but it is generally recommended that all Windows gamers upgrade to the latest version.

There is a new Windows Vista WHQL driver release available to download from NVIDIA, v162.22. This is a new driver which will support GeForce 6, 7, and 8 series graphics boards.

NVIDIA ForceWare v162.22 WHQL

Creative has released a new Beta Driver for the SoundBlaster Audigy and X-Fi series cards, apparently addressing an OpenAL problem. This beta is only recommended for those who are experiencing major problems with their current audio drivers.

A new map pack is now available for Rainbow Six: Vegas, providing owners of the PC edition of the game all the maps from the Red and Black packs that were sold online for Xbox 360. The 655 MB download is available from FileFront, FileShack, Gamer's Hell, and The Patches Scrolls.
