The future of Battlefield 2 seems like to be at its end. The last patch update was the 1.41 back in November 2006. So while it is still possible EA/DICE will officially deny this rumor, it is doubtful that they would ever officially confirm it. Right now EA?Dice is focusing on BF2142 and other games and not the original BF2.
